For pet cat owners, a cat scratching tree or post is of utmost importance. A scratching post is perfect to protect your furniture and save your sanity without the harmful effects of declawing. It will, also, save your sanity and bank account balance.
When shopping for a scratching post for your feline look for something that is covered in a thick or course carpet or material. Your cat will get attached to these materials very quickly. Another consideration to take into account is the base of the tree. Make sure the base is either wide or heavy or both if it is a tall post. Cats that have been startled by falling scratching posts have been known to stop using them completely and resorting back to using the furniture. Tall posts might offer more enjoyment for your cat because he or she can stretch out and scratch at the same time but the base becomes more important to prevent falling.
